Pirate Life Brewing’s story began in the cellars of the Scottish craft brewer, BrewDog. It was here that Jack Cameron and Jared "Red" Proudfoot met as brewing apprentices and forged a friendship (or some might say 'hatched a canny plan') that would culminate in the formation of the Pirate Life Brewing Company of Hindmarsh SA. Now there's a story worth sticking around for...
With Jack's dad, Michael, a former BrewDog employee coming aboard (LOL) as CEO, the team set up shop in a truly man-sized tin shed in 2014. Their operation houses a 2,500 litre brewhouse at one end plus four 5,000 litre fermenters, two 2,500 litre fermenters, a small lab and a trusty 'tinnie' canning machine at the other.
Pirate Life was founded on the belief that given the opportunity, most people in Australia and around the world would prefer – as we do – to drink high quality, full flavoured beers.
The brewery has been steadily amassing an array of medals and awards since first launching their session IPA 'Throwback' in March 2015 (tasting notes below). In such a short amount of time they have established a considerable presence on the Australian craft beer landscape. To such an extent that a tap on the shoulder from global brewing giant AB Inbev eventuated in a financial partnership destined to launch the tiny South Aus drop into pubs, bars and bar-fridges across the seven seas . Aaargggh me hearties!
Their most popular drop is the Pirate Life Pale Ale (tasting notes below), which at last count is on tap in more than 30 venues. To complement the core range, seasonal and limited release beers will also find their way into the drinker’s hand. Can't wait to see what will be on offer at the Kangaroo Valley Craft Beer & BBQ Festival.
Do what you want, when you want, wherever you want. We plan to live the life of Pirates!
While hops are central here... they're deeper and darker than those found in the Throwback or IIPA, with some of that pine forest floor character you expect from old school West Coast hops alongside the citrus elements, and are joined by prominent sharp caramel malts to create a creamy lushness on the palate. There's something herbal there too and a hearty bitterness to wrap things up.
Malts: Pale Malt, Carahell, Crystal, Carafa
Hops: Mosaic, Cascade
ABV 5.40% IBU 50
We decided to brew a homage to the most delicious of hops. The plan was pretty straight forward: use a simple malt bill and let the Mosaic do the talking. The resulting beer is as the name implies; a kaleidoscopic journey through tropical flavours. Somehow, Mosaic finds a way to impart every delicious flavour you ask of hops, all on its own. Backed by a clean, light malt bill it's the beer equivalent of a fruit punch juice box.
Malts: Ale Malt, Carapils
ABV 7.00% IBU 58
Pouring a hazy golden colour the first thing that hits you is the aroma of fresh hops pouring out of the glass. Light bodied with a lovely carbonation, this mid strength IPA certainly holds nothing back on flavour. Look for a citrus/piney hit of fresh hops on the palate with a light malt backing and slight bitterness. Ideal for that Sunday BBQ.
Malts: Golden Promise, Munich, Carapils, Wheat, Crystal
Hops: Simcoe, NZ Cascade, Summer
ABV 3.5% IBU 35
